There are now filters currently available, and the viewing angle is limited, but you can control the depth of field, zoom in and out, and take horizontal or vertical shots. Especially with the wide variety of costumes, you can go nuts and create awesome shots that you can easily share and use afterwards. Usually, I wouldn’t highlight a photo mode in a game like DOA 6, but I have to admit that I sunk a significant amount of time into just watching a rematch or two CPUs fighting so I could take pictures. They do look a bit weird at times and not so realistic, but it still is nice to see some clothing tear or bruises on the characters. You can also turn features like sweat, blood or brutality off, should you desire. It’s also where the game shows you the punches in slow motion with some increased brutality - not by any means comparable to the likes of Mortal Kombat, but a nice touch nonetheless. This new feature lets you use special attacks that can stun your opponent for a short time, perform counter attacks, and unleash a special move once the meter is full. This time around, Team Ninja have also integrated a new feature with the Break Gauge, which fills up during attacks and while getting hit that is triggered with one of the shoulder buttons (on console). The system involves creating opportunities for extra damage by attacking or grabbing enemies with a kick or counter at the right time. And when did fighting games need a great and meaningful story anyways? Limit BreakerĭOA and its triangle system is well known and respected in the genre. It is far from taking itself seriously, so if you are into this kind of presentation, you’ll feel right at home. You can probably have a laugh or two at the presentation. It definitely makes it more accessible for smaller gaming sessions but adds to the overall messiness of the story. So, it feels a lot more episodic and choose-your-own-adventure-esque. Some of it is just small cut-scenes, and the others are mostly one round fights against another character. The story is laid out on a massive board with every character having their own story-string through the adventure. There are some new additions, existing and planned, that increase the roster, like the demon girl, Nyotengu. Naturally, all franchise favourites will be present in the game, including Kasumi, Ayane, Hayate, Hayabusa, Christie and co. However, the game stays in tune with its overall continuity: though Kasumi had retired in DOA 5 from her clan, she did not find the peace she was hoping for. And the DOATEC organization is continuing as the conspiring company a la Umbrella Corp. It’s cheesy, unnecessarily confusing, and basically, everyone is someone’s brother, sister or clone. Let me say this up front: you don’t play DOA for the story. If you’ve been playing fighting games for decades or just starting, DOA 6 offers a lot to like and enjoy but also leaves some room for future improvement via DLCs, especially for online matches.
